Geneva Celestine Smith was born November 10, 1934 to the late Mattie C. Black in Chicago, Illinois. She began her formal education in Kokomo, Indiana and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she attended and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1952.
She was joined in marriage to Clen (Zip) Proctor in 1954 and to this union two children were born: DeeAnna and Jeffery. In 1964 she was united in marriage to Shelby Lee Smith Jr. and one son, Christopher Smith, was born of this union.
Geneva was employed by the Emmet J. Bean Finance Center at Fort Harrison in Indianapolis and retired after 35 years. She was also an Avon Representative for many years and amassed many faithful customers.
Geneva enjoyed many outdoor activities, but mostly she loved planting flowers and cultivating her yard. Her gardening skills were exceptional, and she received many compliments from neighbors, friends and even those passing by. In her later years, playing Bingo became one of her favorite pastimes and brought her much enjoyment.
Geneva departed her earthly home on Sunday, June 4, 2023. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mattie, step-father, Alfred Black, sister, Romona Black Poindexter, both husbands, Clen and Shelby, and daughter, DeAnna Proctor Ferrell. She leaves to cherish her memory to Two sons, Jeffery Proctor and Christopher Smith, and she is also survived by two brothers, James and Charles Black. Her legacy will live on in her four grandchildren: Holly Ferrell Brown, Jarreau Ferrell, Melanie Hayashi and Crystal Proctor- Updyke as well as her six Great-grandchildren, Imani, Zion, Genesis, Devon, Miles, and Amaya, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
