Fred Quay Bishop Jr.

November 26, 1946 — May 29, 2022

Indianapolis, IN

Fred “Freddie” Quay Bishop Jr, 75, from Indianapolis, passed peacefully into eternal life and into the welcoming arms of his Heavenly Father on May 29, 2022 while he was in Hospice Care at Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis.

His family and friends will Celebrate for him on Saturday, June 4, 2022. The service will take place at 1 pm at Faith Community Church, 6801 S East Street, Indianapolis. Military Honors will follow the service.  Fred was known for his love of vanilla ice cream. Therefore all attending will be served cake and ice cream in the Church’s Fellowship Hall to share memories of “life with Fred”.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Brenda (Meyer) Bishop; daughters, Joanna (Marwen) Halek, Melinda (Joe) Schiltz, and Tiffany (Matthew) Johnston; grandchildren, Hannah and Allie Johnston and Lucas and Lilly Hess; sisters, Judy (Jim) Perry and Rose (Mike) Savini; and of course all his remaining earthly family and friends.

Fred not only was welcomed to heaven by his Savior, Jesus, but also had several family members who were awaiting his arrival. His parents, Fred Q Bishop Sr and Mabel G (Reuter) Allen; his oldest sister, Carolyn S Kellar, her husband Bill, and her daughter, “Becky” Cunningham; plus in-laws, “Jayne” and “Dutch” Meyer, and sister-in-law, Peggy (Meyer) and her husband, Sam Jeffries.

Fred graduated from Southport High School, Indianapolis, in 1965.  He and Brenda met as Sophomores in 1963 and were married in 1967.

Fred served in the US Army from 1966-1969, which included one year in VietNam.

He also answered God’s call to serve in His Army which began with Youth Work in 1969 at Brenda’s home church, Edgewood United Methodist, and led to a commitment to full time ministry in the United Methodist Church. After graduating from IUPUI, Indianapolis, in 1974, he went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Divinity from United Theological Seminary in 1977.  He began serving as a student pastor while attending seminary in 1974 and after receiving 7 more church appointments (1974-2006) as an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he (and Brenda) decided he was ready to officially retire from church pastoring. But God wasn’t done with Fred’s ministering and Fred accepted the position of Director of Pastoral Care for Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers and continued to work there for 6 more years when he finally decided to fully retire from paid ministry. Everyone who ever knew Fred knows that he never stopped ministering to everyone he came in contact with.  His compassion for all was his greatest attribute.
