Elias "Eli" Joseph Smith

Elias “Eli” Joseph Smith, 40, of Brooklyn, NY and formerly of Carmel, IN passed away March 27, 2021. He was born June 26, 1980, the son of David W. and MaryAnn (Knapp) Smith. He married Lindsey Hutcherson on October 9, 2011, in Brooklyn, NY.

Eli was a 1998 graduate of Carmel High School. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He later received a master’s degree from Pace University in New York City, and an additional master’s degree in Education Administration from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. Eli worked for many years as a middle school math teacher. In 2014, Eli was appointed the Assistant Principal at The Math & Science Exploratory School in Brooklyn where he has worked since.

Eli and Lindsey loved to travel and were able to see several destinations throughout the world. They traveled to Japan, Southeast Asia, Central and South America and Hawaii. He also enjoyed growing his own flowers and vegetables, any and all music, cooking and eating diverse and ethnic foods. Eli’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with family, especially at the family lake house in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was an active community member in his neighborhood in Sunset Park, Brooklyn where he lived with his wife and children.

He is survived by his parents, David and MaryAnn Smith; wife, Lindsey Smith; their two children, Eveline (Evie) and Beau; three siblings, Ben (fiancée Chelsey McShane), Courtenay (Steve) Wagner, and Michelle (fiancé Dave Hartzler) Hancock; mother-in-law, Heidi Hutcherson; two sisters-in-law, Caitlin (Omar Pulido) Hutcherson and Kyleigh Hutcherson; and seven nieces and nephews, Tori, Adam, Jake, Wes, Regan, Mia, and Livia. He was preceded in passing by his maternal grandparents, Marvin and Kathryn Knapp, and paternal grandparents, Clyde and Ethel Smith.

There was a private service for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the GoFundMe established to assist Lindsey and the children.  Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Carmel.
