Dr. Panayotis George Iatridispassed away on July 9, 2016, he was 89. Dr. Iatridis was a former AssistantDean of Indiana University School of Medicine and the Director of the NorthwestCenter for Medical Education. Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1926, Dr. Iatridislater moved to Greece where he received an M.D. and Ph.D. in Physiology fromthe University of Athens. Dr. Iatridis came to the United States as a professorat the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the 1960s where heconducted research as a hematologist on blood coagulation and thrombosis. Dr.Iatridis moved to Valparaiso, Indiana in 1972 to continue his research and teaching.During his tenure in Northwest Indiana, he established the Indiana UniversityNorthwest Center for Medical Education in Gary as a premier institution formedical education. Dr. Iatridis was appointed as its Director in 1975 andAssistant Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1979, he servedin both positions until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Iatridis pioneered manyresearch and teaching methods, including a system of problem based learning formedical students. He was a dedicated physician, researcher and professor, and amember of innumerable societies including the American College of Physicians,the Academy of Athens, and was President of the Lake County Medical Society.Dr. Iatridis was a recipient of the Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. DistinguishedFaculty Award as well as a recipient of the Medal of St. Paul from theArchdiocesan of the Greek Orthodox Church of America. In 1998 he was appointeda Chieftan and Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. Dr.Iatridis was a beloved husband, father, brother and friend. He is survived byhis wife Nina Iatridis, his two daughters Yanna Kokkas (Panos Kokkas), MaryPease (Greg Pease) and five grandchildren Katerina Kokkas, Anastasia Kokkas,Nicholas Pease, Naya Pease and George Pease, his sister Kaliopi Kyrkou andbrother Sotiri Iatridis. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. GeorgeIatridis, mother Ioanna Iatridis, sister Eleftheria Mandikas, and brothersEmmanuel, Vasili and Kimon Iatridis. Calling will be held on Wednesday July 13,2016 at St George Eastern Orthodox Church 10748 East 116th StreetFishers, IN 46037 from 4 to 8 pm with a Trisagion Service at 7 pm. Additional calling will be held on ThursdayJuly 14, 2016 beginning at 10 am to 11 am followed by the funeral service at 11am. Burial will be in Oaklawn MemorialGardens Cemetery Fishers, IN.
