Dr. Lynn E. Morrell, age 74, passed from this life on Monday September 12, 2016, in his home. He was born January 13th, 1942 in Geneseo, IL to James and Doris Morrell. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Lyle Morrell, three sisters Betty Dahl, Martha Maloy, and Shirley Hoffmeier, and granddaughter Morgan Ramey. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Cheryl, his children Nicole Ramey, Michael Morrell, Alyssa King, grandchildren Jacob Crosby, Tyler Ramey, Emma Morrell, Jackson Morrell, Noah Morrell, Sawyer Morrell, Nolan King, sisters Ruth Sinnes, Mary Nevling, Patricia Harper, Marge Headley, Sally Schwaner, and brothers Larry and Jim Morrell.
He honored his country by serving for 5 years in the United States Marine Corp. During his service, he was decorated with two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star from the Vietnam War. He graduated from Truman State University with a B.S. degree in education, received a Masters and Ed.S degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and a Doctorate in higher education and Kinesiology from Indiana University.
Lynn was a professor and department chairman at Marian University for 38 years. He served as the head baseball coach for 18 years and was recognized as Coach of the Year on several occasions. During his 18 years of coaching, he won a district championship and accumulated over 300 wins. He was inducted into the Wall of Fame at Marian University on January 30th, 1999, for his contributions and dedication to the Marian baseball program. He directed the National Youth Sports Program for underprivileged children for 18 years. He was the Competition Coordinator for baseball in the 1987 Pan American games. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash and it was declared Lynn Morrell day by Governor Bayh on September 30, 1989. This award was for his service to the community and his expertise as a professor, mentor, and coach. His impact on Marian University, the Indianapolis community, and baseball has placed Dr. Morrell at a level few have achieved. His mentoring and accomplishments have touched many lives and he will be sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Lynn Morrell Memorial Scholarship fund.
