Donald Harvey Meyers, Jr.

Donald Harvey Meyers, Jr., 72, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019.  He was born in Walter Reed Hospital, then located in Washington, D.C. on August 12, 1946 to the late Donald Harvey Meyers, Sr. and Catherine Lorraine (Connell) Meyers.

Don grew up in Maryland and spent his early years living with his maternal grandparents, Sidney Samuel and Hattie Violet Connell.  At age 13, he relocated with his father, Donald and step-mother, Shirley to France where they lived for several years.  After moving back to the United States, he graduated from Wheaton High School in 1965 and followed in his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the U.S. Army; serving in Vietnam from 1965-1968.  Don was proud of his military service, but rarely spoke of it.

Upon returning from Vietnam he joined the Indianapolis Fire Department, retiring as an Engineer on Ladder 18 in 1994 after 24 years of service.  Don enjoyed several activities outside of work; he was a pilot, enjoyed metal detecting, hunting for arrowheads and spending Friday nights at Indiana Live Casino.  Don was also a member of the Moose Lodge Speedway 500 and was an animal lover.

He is survived by his granddaughter, Lindsey Meyers; siblings, Donna Meyers, Scott (Patty) Meyers, Sharon (Phil) Chamberlin and George (Kathy) Wilson.  Don is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Melinda (Tony) Chavis; former spouse and caregiver, Kay (Bob) Yorn; and devoted canine companion, Teddy.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald H. “Donnie” Meyers, III; and sister, Kathy Sancomb.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 from 12-2pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East with funeral services immediately following.  Burial with Military Honors will take place in Washington Park East Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to the Indianapolis Humane Society.
