Dianne Elise Aabye Black, born July 2nd, 1935, passed away on March 22nd, 2023, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dianne was the beloved youngest daughter of the late Edwin and Genevieve Aabye. She was preceded in death by her sister Nancy Aabye Batey. Dianne was the proud mother of Michael (Cathy) Black of Jasper, Tennessee, and Scott (Lisa) Black of Brownsburg, Indiana. Dianne is survived by her cherished grandchildren Chelsea Black, Emma (Cory) Hagemier, Jesse Black, Kyle (Mariea) Black, and Elise Black. Dianne also leaves behind nephews Adrian and Greg Batey and her life-long dear friend, Sylvia Mills, of Indianapolis.
Dianne was born in Orange, New Jersey, but called Indianapolis home for most of her life. She attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and went on to graduate from Denison University in Granville, Ohio where she earned a BA in Mathematics. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, NAEYC, IAEYC, and ILCCA.
Dianne was passionate about early childhood education. She began making a difference for children in that role in 1974 as director of the South Wales Community Center in New York state. In 1984, she began a career with the Day Nursery Association of Indianapolis, operating facilities in several locations.
An unwavering Indianapolis Colts fan, Dianne enjoyed football and many other professional sports. She also had a life-long passion for knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Recently she enjoyed new friendships with Sit ‘N Knit, a group based in Plainfield, Indiana. Dianne’s family will continue to treasure many of her beautiful hand-made creations.
