David Jonathan Matas

May 9, 1947 — July 5, 2020

Lebanon, IN

David Jonathan Matas, of Lebanon, IN, was born on May 9th, 1947 to Karl and Mary Matas in Johnstown, PA. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on July 5th, 2020.
He was the youngest of sixteen children along with his twin brother. Through the years, there were many interesting and powerful stories shared in their home. The Matas’ were an incredible testament to a true God-fearing family. They enjoyed regular meals at their table of eighteen, sharing prayers and fellowship.
David’s father, Karl, was a minister of the Church of God and worked in the steel mills of Johnstown, PA. David’s parents arrived in the United States through Ellis Island, NY from Czechoslovakia and proudly became US citizens. David, being the youngest child, was raised by several members of his family along with his parents. His brothers taught him many things, such as fishing, camping, and hiking. He loved the outdoors and continued that tradition with his own children. After high school, he attended Anderson University where he majored in accounting and finance. He went on to obtain his insurance license and began a successful career at the Home Agency. It was then that he made his home in central Indiana and started a family in the community of Greenwood. He continued to be an active member in their local church. After his career in insurance ended, he started his own business assisting seniors with daily activities.
David was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his Sunday football. He especially loved the Penn State Nittany Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers.
David always projected compassion, humility and kindness toward others. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Connie Matas (Collins) and a blended family of six children. Greg (Krista) Matas, Richard (Elizabeth) Matas, Stephanie (Justin) Matas, Robin (Kevin) DeTrude, Thomas Janes II, and Blythe (Zach) Logan. He also has many loving grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The Matas family would like to give a special thanks to all those that cared for David through his illness, beginning in 2014: Witham Hospital, Urology of Indiana, Methodist Hospital, University Hospital, and IU Health Hospice services.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on Friday from 9:30-11am at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Rd.
