David Henry Richards

David H. Richards, 64, of Rockville, Indiana went home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 27, 1954 in Williams, Arizona to James and Lula Mae Richards; he was one of three children.

In 1974 David enlisted in the military and faithfully served his country for 20 years; he retired as a Major in January of 1997 from the United States Army.  He loved his God and was eager to share his faith with all. He taught Theology at Crossroads Bible College and pastored Beacon Baptist Church, Shelbyville, IN.  For the past 15 years, he served as senior pastor at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church in Indianapolis. He met the love of his life, Debra, in 1974.  For Dave, it was love at first sight and the two were married just a few months later on July 14, 1974. They spent 44 beautiful years together raising their two children and serving their community. They remain deeply in love at the time of his passing. Dave was an adventurous man who was a shepherd to all who needed him; he gave continuously of himself, becoming a friend, father figure, and confidante to all. He had the innate ability to make anyone he engaged feel like they were the only person in the room. He was personable, truly never meeting a stranger. He had a wonderful sense of humor who went “all in” on anything he set his mind to. Dave believed in the importance of studying theology and his teachings greatly impacted the lives of countless people through theology classes, pastoral teachings and one on one discussions.  He shared his love of Jesus with all he met, through words and actions. He was forgiving, passionate, and always loving; attributes we could all learn from David. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were blessed enough to meet him, but peace can be found in knowing he is with the Lord and a glorious reunion will take place one day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Lula Richards. David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Debra; children, Dave Jr. (Amber) Richards and Patricia (Brent) Ells; six adored grandchildren; and siblings Janet and James Richards. Family would also like to recognize the staff at St. Francis Oncology and Gipson Family Hospice for their care and kindness extended during Dave’s valiant fight. Family and friends are invited to visit Friday, January 18 at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church, 5649 Kentucky Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46221 from 4-7 PM. Funeral services will take place Saturday, January 19 at 11 AM at the church with visitation one hour prior to service.
