David Fred Whitlow

David Fred Whitlow, 96, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away February 16, 2022. Fred was born December 27, 1925, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late William Vuel and Jennie Ann (Frazier) Whitlow. Fred was an ambitious child and by the age of eight he had his own paper route. He later found himself working in the farm fields helping with bailing hay, thrashing, and shucking corn by hand. Fred grew up in Jamestown, Indiana and Danville, Illinois following his father, who was a minister. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the infantry in Germany and France. In 1956, Fred began a career in sheet metal and became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 41 (now Local 20), where he oversaw many jobs for them. He spent the last twenty years of his working career as an officer and business agent of the Union. Fred married Lois Hunter on April 22, 1967, and they were blessed with two children, Jennifer Ann and Douglas Edward. He liked to keep his home and yard in tiptop shape, and he especially enjoyed cutting his grass. He retired in 1989. Fred and Lois enjoyed traveling in the U.S. including driving to Alaska, on one of their many trips. They traveled on numerous cruises to the Caribbean, the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas, Hawaii, and Alaska and often camped in their travel trailer. In addition to travel, Fred also liked to tinker with cars, especially his 1964, 1965, and 1966 Corvettes, having the 1966 for the past 45 years. Fred was a member of Valley Mills Christian Church and the Oakland Masonic Lodge 140.
Fred is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois, children, Jennifer Ann (Scott) Cole, Douglas Edward (Julie) Whitlow, grandchildren, Megan (Jarrin) Milakovic, Cameron Cole, Gretchen Cole, Carson Cole, Griffin Cole, Nicholas Whitlow, Abigail Whitlow, and nephews, David Gibson and Gary Whitlow. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his older sister, Mary Inez Gibson, his older brother, William Rex Whitlow, a half-brother, Lester Whitlow and half -sister, Ruth Ann Williams. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 11am at Valley Mills Christian Church, 5555 Kentucky Ave. Indianapolis, IN with visitation there from 9:00am until the service at 11:00am. Fred will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN. The family requests any memorial gifts be made to Valley Mills Christian Church at the address listed above.
