David Alan Carter

March 31, 1962 — September 20, 2018

Indianapolis, Indiana

David Alan Carter, 56, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on September 20, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 31, 1962 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ola and Mary Elsie Carter; one of three sons.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Dave, as his friends called him, graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1980, where he was a member of the marching band. He then attended Ball State University where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Manufacturing. Ball State was also the place he met the love of his life, Brenda, in November of 1980. One of Dave’s friends had his eye on her but he just knew she was the one for him. On their first date, they attended the Watermelon Bust at school and the rest is history. The two were married September 3, 1982 and spent 35 beautiful years together raising their two children and serving their community. They remain deeply in love at the time of his passing.

Dave was extremely involved in his community. He belonged to the Ben Davis Lions Club, was a 4-H leader for over 20 years, and a 4-H director for 11 years. He was also on the Marion County Fair Board serving as their vice-president and was the President of the Board of Trustees for Lions Club Camp Woodsmoke. He was active in the Praise Band at his church, Church of the Master, where he played bass guitar. He could also be found in the back-up band for the Ben Davis show choirs and jazz band. Dave was also passionate in officiating football games from varsity to semi-pro. This jack-of-all trades even played Santa for years, bringing joy to children all around. He was a beloved staff member at the Area 31 Career Center at Ben Davis where he taught Intro to Construction; it broke his heart when his health prevented him from returning to his class.

While all of these things tell about Dave’s busy but fulfilling life, most will remember him for being jovial, full of love, and always smiling. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and would drop anything he was doing in an instant if someone else was in need. Dave was supportive, the Mr. Fix-It of the family. He also deemed himself “The Fountain of Useless Information” since he seemed to excel in trivia and always have a solution at hand for almost any problem. He was an amazing husband who, according to his wife, only had one fault…being late. He was the best dad, often sacrificing his own comfort to tend to his children’s needs. One thing is for certain, his passing leaves a sorrowful void in all those who were blessed enough to meet him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ola Martin and Mary Elsie Carter; brother, Dr. Arnold L. Carter. Surviving to carry on his legacy are wife of 35 years, Brenda Carter; children, Mathew D. Carter and Allison P. (Shaye) Alexander; brother, Bil (Linda) Carter; granddaughter, Mira Alexander; grandson, Donovan David Alexander, who is due later this month; sisters-in-law, Jan Carter and Toni Carter; as well as a host of loving family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to visit Monday, September 24 from 4-8 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, September 25 at 10 AM at the funeral home.
