Cora Lee Foster

May 8, 1921 — April 16, 2017

Cora Lee Foster, 95, passed away on April 16, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the home of her daughter. She was born May 8, 1921 in St. Francisville, Louisiana to George and Frances Anderson. As a young adult she moved to Indianapolis, IN where she would soon meet her future husband, Garfield Foster.

Cora was a God fearing woman that faithfully attended Purpose of Life Ministries (formerly Second Baptist Church). For many years she served on the Usher Board and the Mothers Board until her health would no longer allowed her to continue serving. She loved her family deeply and always strove to bring peace and harmony to her home. Cora enjoyed cooking, and worked in that capacity for various employers before retiring from Modern Vending.

Her love of cooking extended to her home where the smell of something delicious from the kitchen lingered in the air. As a child, her eldest son always woke every morning asking “mama what did you cook on the stove last night?”. Her home was a welcoming place and often children from the neighborhood mysteriously appeared around dinner time, but she never turned them away. She had a “green thumb” and had numerous house plants scattered about her home and also maintained a garden in her backyard. Her eldest daughter recalls Cora as an aspiring writer before a growing family took her focus away from writing. Fortunately, her writing gene has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son John D. Foster (Magdalene) daughters Stephanie Johnson, Mary Foster, Lois Foster, Kimberly Foster, a host of grandchildren, great grand children, great great grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and siblings Carrie Holliday of Portland, OR, Bessie Nixon of Harvey, LA, Viola Buckley, Ora Lee Allen and Jerry Nixon of St. Francisville, LA , Bernice Stevens and Rosa Nell Miller of Houston, TX and Lillie Tolbert of Mount Airy, LA.

Cora is preceded in death by her husband, Garfield Foster; daughter Frances Ann Foster, son Craig Auston Foster, grandson Maurice Leon Hudgins Jr, granddaughter Dannielle Nicole Foster, step daughter Tahia Foster, sister Floyzell Cooks, and brother William Nixon, Sr.
