Col. John A. Hauck

Services for retired Col. John A. Hauck, 95, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Flanner and Buchanan-Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St., with calling that day from noon. He died July 13 at home in Palm Bay, Fla. Col. Hauck, an Army veteran of World War II, had served 10 years as chief of staff in the Office of the Adjutant General of Indiana, retiring in 1977. During the war, he served in the Aleutian Islands as his unit’s sergeant major. A native of Terre Haute and former Indianapolis resident, he was discharged from active duty in November 1945, joined the Indiana Army National Guard in 1947 and worked in the Military Department of Indiana until retiring. His military career spanned more than 33 years. While in the Guard, Col. Hauck was proud to be a field artilleryman. He relished the camaraderie of fellow soldiers and officers, and he especially enjoyed his time as battalion commander of the 139th Field Artillery in Crawfordsville, overseeing the Guard’s first firing of the Honest John rocket. He was recognized for exceptionally meritorious service with the Legion of Merit award and the Army Commendation Medal. He was a graduate of Wabash College, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta, and of the Command and General Staff College. He attended Center Community Church in Plainfield, and he was a lifetime member of The American Legion, National Guard Association of the United States, United States Field Artillery Association and the Red Leg Association. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Gracie Hauck; sons John, Patrick and Tony Hauck; daughters, Barbara Binder, Kathleen Chastain, Rosemary McCandless and Sally Longoria; stepchildren, David and James Gillaspy, Linda Hein and Patti Smith; brother Tom Hauck and sisters Pat Hauck, Martha Kaminski and Jean Clark; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Walter Hauck and Helen Frisz Hauck; and his sisters, Jo Foerester and Mary Dulin.
