Carolyn Joan Bourke

Carolyn Joan Bourke passed away August 2, 2022, at the age of 92. She was born on June 16, 1930, in Wilmington, Ohio to parents Jesse Louise and Francis Clifford Jackson. Carolyn attended Smith Place School through 7th grade and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1948. Shortly after, she met her beloved husband, Dick. They were married in 1952 and moved to Worthington, OH. Then in 1962 they moved to Speedway where they settled in for the remainder of their lives. Carolyn and Dick celebrated 50 glorious years together until his death in 2002.

Carolyn was a woman of many interests and talents. She was a member of the Service League, volunteering at their shop, the Duffel Bag, tutored reading, was a member of the Women’s Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra where she was twice voted Volunteer of the Year, played in a weekly women’s golf league, bowling league, couple’s bridge group, as well as a women’s bridge group, and enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world. She spent countless hours attending grandchildren’s concerts, sporting events, and programs. Carolyn’s family and friends meant the world to her.

Carolyn is survived by her children Susan (Dan) Shullenberger, Kevin (Janet) Bourke, and Nancy (Fred) Raub; grandchildren Eric (Hannah) Shullenberger, Hannah (Chris) Million, David (Michelle) Shullenberger, Mary Shullenberger, Ted (Claire) Bourke, Sophia Bourke, Philip Bourke, Grace Bourke, Elijah Bourke, Brian (Erin) Raub, and Alex Raub; great-grandchildren James Shullenberger, and Eleanor and Louise Million; sister Alice Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Richard, granddaughter Abby Raub, sisters and brothers-in-law Clairice and IG Hawk, Marjorie and Dwight Drummond, brother-in-law Ron Davis, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ann and Dick Welsh, Ellen and Jim Gleason, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Mary Bourke.

Service for Carolyn will be at Flanner Buchanan – Speedway at 2950 N. High School Road in Indianapolis on Friday August 12, 2022. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., with service beginning at 12:30 p.m., and burial immediately following at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, IN.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carolyn’s memory may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N Meridian St. Indianapolis, 46260 or to the Speedway Public Library.
