Blanche E. Poteat

August 26, 1939 — March 30, 2018

Indianapolis, Indiana

Blanche E. Poteat was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on March 30th. Blanche was born on August 26th, 1939 to Alma and Millard Edwards in Speedwell, Tennessee. She was the second oldest child out of eight. She was raised on the family farm in Speedwell and enjoyed spending time there her entire life.

Blanche met Donald Poteat at the Tennessee school for the Deaf in 1962. They were engaged and married just three months later. This June they would have celebrated 56 years together. Blanche and Don moved to Indianapolis in 1963 for Don to work at the Indiana School for the Deaf. Blanche became employed by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service and retired there after 42 years of service.

Blanche was very involved in her church, the Lawrence Church of God, where she was a member for 49 years. Her faith was evident in everything she did and said. She never met someone without sharing her faith and asking if they knew Jesus. She was a fierce prayer warrior for her family and friends.

Blanche and Don had three children, Stephen Poteat, Brett Poteat , and Angelia (Poteat) Quinn (Joshua). Her life’s calling was to love her family and make her home a welcoming and loving environment. She had five grandchildren; Kelsey Silvey, Faith Silvey, Breanna Poteat, Laureli Quinn, and Cormick Quinn. She was known for doting over her grandkids as they were the joy of her life.

She was a safe place for all who knew her, and she embodied Christ’s love for others. She often baked and prepared meals for those going through a hard time. She gave generously and loved deeply. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, and cleaning.

Blanche is survived by her husband, children and siblings Betty Fischer, Lynda Hardesty (Dean), Jane Aldrich (David), and Bill Edwards, and Kathy McCartt (Kenny). She was preceded in death by her parents Alma and Millard Edwards, brothers Lloyd and Roy Edwards, and many friends.

A celebration of life will be held at the Lawrence Church of God in Indianapolis on Saturday April 7th with visitation from 4-6pm with a service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lawrence Church of God Caring Center.
