Bettye N Winters

Bettye Neil (Schumpert) Winters, age 94, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 12, 2023.

Bettye was born in Nashville, Tennessee the daughter of Benjamin Randolph Schumpert and Miriam Laessle (née Cozart) previously Miriam Schumpert on August 16, 1928. She graduated from the college department of Ward-Belmont School.

She married Matthew Winters, Jr. of Indianapolis on December 20, 1948, whom she had met when Matt was a student at The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. They then moved to Bloomington, Indiana and on to Indianapolis. They were married for 63 years. Matt preceded her in death on February 2, 2012.
Bettye retired from Peoples Bank (now Fifth Third) as an assistant branch manager. She enjoyed her lengthy career, which she had started as a part-time job. She held various positions over the years from being a teller to becoming secretary to the bank president. In her spare time Bettye enjoyed doing needlepoint, as well as, going antiquing in order to make and find the lovely items that filled her home. Along with her husband, she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis.

Bettye is survived by her sons Matthew (Vivian) Winters III of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, William M. Winters of Winnetka, Illinois, three grandchildren Dr. Joshua M. (Lindsay) Winters, Alison K. Winters, and Mark W. (Chelsy) Winters. She also has three great-grandchildren Knox, Rory and Brooks Winters.

Funeral services will be private.
