Bertha Mae Barton O’Grady, 97, passed away in her sleep on April 3, 2018, at her home in Indianapolis.
Bertha was born in Holland, Kentucky, on June 28, 1920, to Caleb Huston Barton and Naomi Ruth Crowder Barton. Following her graduation from Mt. Zion High School in 1938, Bertha came to live in Indianapolis for the first time. After returning home to Kentucky for a short while, she came back to Indianapolis and married Archie A. O’Grady, a native of the city, on Nov. 22, 1946.
Bertha and her husband were members of the former Central Baptist Church. They were avid travelers and visited most of the lower 48 states. She was a homemaker and retail clerk for her brother’s grocery store business. She was close to her family, especially her nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and neighbors, having lived in the same home for over 60 years. Bertha maintained a positive outlook on life all the way to the end.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Barton Jent; her brothers, James Fletcher Barton, Tommie Clemons Barton, Aldridge Huston Barton, Guy Ellis Barton, Ralph C. Barton, Homer Malcomb Barton, and Willie Caleb Barton. She is survived by her niece, Lisa Barton Pack of Martinsville, and her nephews, Tommy Lee Barton of Indianapolis and Kevin C. Barton of Mooresville.
Services will be at Noon on April 7 at Flanner Buchanan– Washington Park East, with calling from 10 a.m. to Noon, prior to the service.
