Bertha “Jean” Bays of Indianapolis entered eternal rest on September 3, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at the age of 90.
She was born June 1, 1928 in Indianapolis. After formal schooling she worked in the cotton mills until meeting the love of her life Dale. They married in 1948, and Jean became the matriarch of their family caring for their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed walking for miles and shopping at local department stores. Jean will be remembered for her quirky sense of humor from crowing to singing in order to entertain others and put a smile on their face.
Jean is survived by her sons Dale Jr. Bays and Michael R. Bays Sr (Kathy); grandchildren Elizabeth Carlson (Jack), Laura Bays, and Michael R. Bays Jr.; great-grandchildren Samantha, Abigail, Renee, Lexi, Justus, and Mikey III; and siblings Rose Goldsby, Linda Howard, Betty Fisher, and Thomas Nichols; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Dale Bays; her mother Bessie May Robbins Flora; and sister Mary Cross.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 6 from 4 to 8 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St, Indianapolis. Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 7 at 11 AM with visitation 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
